About

Why I Do What I Do

Nonprofits make an extraordinary difference in the lives of people and communities throughout our country.  Every day nonprofits partner with individuals and communities to:

  • Give voice to the disenfranchised
  • Protect and sustain our environment
  • Enrich our lives with arts and culture
  • Provide housing, health care, and education
  • Help us connect, support, and strengthen one another

That’s why I do what I do!

Guiding Principles

  • Listen
  • Start where the client is at
  • Work with honesty and integrity
  • My job is to help you succeed
  • You have the content knowledge

Assumptions and Values

  • The bottom line isn’t the organizations we create it’s the people and communities we serve.
  • Clear outcomes and a realistic Theory of Change go a long way to galvanizing support and achieving your mission.
  • Achieving your mission requires the discipline to focus, an openness to new possibilities and the wisdom to know which to do when.
  • Organizational capacity matters.

Roots – I am from…

  • Hong Kong, Ann Arbor in the 60’s, the cornfields of Indiana, the neighborhoods of Chicago, and the beauty of NH’s Seacoast.
  • Midwest German Lutherans, stalwart Sorbs, visionary parents, community organizing mentors, loyal friends, and a partner and children who are my heart and my home.

Life Beyond Work

I
confess I love to work.  But I also love:

  • British mysteries
  • Boogie boarding (yes I’m the oldest one out there)
  • Hiking New Hampshire’s glorious mountains
  • Springsteen songs that touch my soul
  • A certain Viking Hoosier Hoopster http://www.cs.unh.edu/~pjh/
