Board Development

How do we recruit new members?

What can we do to make our board meetings more productive?

What is the role of the board?

These are just a few of the questions boards often face. Peggy works with boards through discussions, coaching and workshops and by connecting boards with some of the excellent materials and tools available in print and on-line.

Kieschnick Consulting Services, Dover, New Hampshire

"Working with my Advisory Board, Peggy valued and integrated each person's participation. She probed and synthesized what was said, moving the group discussion rather than parroting comments. Her preparation and follow-up were thorough, insightful, and at times innovative. "

FAQ - Board Development

Where can I get a Board Self- Assessment Tool? The Corporate Fund has developed an excellent, in-depth self-assessment kit. The kit is available on-line at: www.thecorporatefund.org

Where can I find out more about specific issues such as board mergers, sample job descriptions, the fiscal responsibility of boards, etc.? One of the most respected resources for non-profit boards is Board Source (formerly known as the National Center for Nonprofit Boards). Their web-site is: www.boardsource.org

Will you help us design a fundraising plan? Peggy is not a fundraiser. What she can do is help you put the pieces in place that you will need in order to develop a fundraising plan that works.

Faced with a sometimes desperate lack of resources, agencies often jump too soon to what would seem to be a logical solution "hire a fundraiser." The catch is that before you develop a fundraising plan, you need to know what you are raising money for.

People don't give to agencies. They give to outcomes - clear, measurable, compelling changes in people's lives and in the world. Which means that you need to be able to clearly articulate what is different in people's lives as a direct result of the work that you do.

Defining these outcomes and "connecting the dots" from what you do to the outcomes, is what Peggy does best.

Effective fundraising depends on an effective board and staff. An agency with a three-member board who only sort of get what you do and who cringe at the thought of fundraising, is not ready to begin a major donor campaign.

In contrast, an agency with a strong, committed, board a clear mission and talented staff can accomplish just about anything.

Peggy can help you develop the board and staff you need to succeed.

So - if you already have a strong board and staff, a clear mission and measurable outcomes, go for it and hire one of the skilled fundraisers that can help you get the dollars you need. If, however, you have some work to do first, consider working with Peggy to get you ready so that the dollars you spend on fundraising lead to big dollars get the highest return.
